The Chinese president, Hu Jintao, hailed today the election of Ma Ying-jeou, the mayor of Taipei, as the chairman of Taiwan's main opposition party, signaling Beijing's expectation that the new party leader will continue to try to improve relations across the Taiwan Strait.
