O século da Ásia

José Cutileiro lembra, no Expresso, que
"Na quarta-feira, uma chinesa foi eleita director da Organização Mundial da Saúde. Um japonês dirige a UNESCO. O secretário-geral eleito da ONU é coreano. Em 2009, a China terá ultrapassado os Estados Unidos na emissão de CO2. Este século vai ser o século da Ásia."

O embaixador defende por isso que "Interesses e valores ocidentais serão mais bem garantidos se Europa e América do Norte fizerem causa comum".

Em 2002, Charles Kupchan escrevia:

"Europe will inevitably rise up as America's principal competitor. Should Washington and Brussels begin to recognize the dangers of the growing gulf between them, they may be able to contain their budding rivalry. Should they fail, however, to prepare for life after Pax Americana, they will ensure that the coming clash of civilizations will be not between the West and the rest but within a West divided against itself.

O que é que a vitória do Partido Democrata, nos EUA, pode ter a ver com isto? Ou será que estamos a meio de um processo estrutural de realinhamento complexo que leva a Europa a reforçar os laços com a Ásia (A China, especialmente), ao mesmo tempo que procura redesenhar a relação de forças com o parceiro transatlântico?
