Maverick Wen

"But wearing a mask is an important survival technique in China's treacherous one-party politics, and if anything, Wen has proved his skills as a survivor. This, remember, is a man who stood beside Zhao Ziyang in Tiananmen Square at the height of the student protests. Zhao, the party chief at the time, was disgraced and effectively served out a life sentence under house arrest. Wen, his aide, went on to the become the third-highest figure in the Chinese hierarchy, and is on his way to becoming its most gifted politician."
